Youth Justice Service Police Officers: Key to Diversion and Partnership Working

Colleagues from across policing and youth justice partnerships are invited to join a Virtual Learning Café run by the Youth Endowment Fund and Centre for Justice Innovation. This is part of our Evidence in Practice series, which sits alongside our Toolkit giving you opportunity to hear from policy experts and practitioners on relevant research and practice.

In April 2025 Centre for Justice Innovation and YEF co-authored the Diversion Practice Guidance. This guidance report draws upon the best available global evidence on diversion for children.

The guidance highlights the importance of having a co-located Police Officer within the YJS and the benefits of this role to support a pro-diverison culture across the partnership.

The Youth Endowment Fund’s (YEF’s) mission is to prevent children and young people from becoming involved in violence.

We know diversion can have a high impact on reducing violent crime; however, access to out of court resolutions varies across the country, meaning some children get a second chance while others get a sentence.

This session will explore the pivotal role of the police officer within the youth justice system. It will showcase how strong partnerships between the police and the YJS help reduce violence and provide vital support to children who are involved in, or at risk of entering, the youth justice system.

Speakers

  • A video message from Chief Constable Catherine Roper, NPCC (National Police Chiefs’ Council) Lead for Children and Young People.
  • A presentation from the Centre for Justice Innovation on the NPCC guidance with a Q&A with the NPCC.

  • A YJS Police Officer.

The event will run online using MS Teams on Thursday 27th November 2025, 11:00-12:30.
