The government has brought new laws in banning ‘zombie’ knives. Some have suggested that we should go further and replace lethal pointed-tip kitchen knives with round-tip knives. It is clear that crime has historically been reduced by reducing opportunities to commit crime – including restrictions on lethal weapons. Drawing on the approach to remove fossil-fuel vehicles from roads, they propose a phased removal of lethal kitchen knives and estimate this will cut knife crime in half. Is this a serious, potentially transformative, suggestion, or a distraction?
