Summary
The Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) is seeking a team to conduct a national survey of how local multi-agency partnerships across England and Wales are working to prevent children and young people’s involvement in, and exposure to, violence.
The study will focus on the strategic partnerships that hold oversight for preventing children’s involvement in, and exposure to, violence at the local authority level, as well as how these partnerships interact with broader structures such as county, regional and local policing body arrangements. This includes Community Safety Partnerships, Local Children’s Safeguarding Partnerships, Violence Reduction Units and any equivalent local structures that provide governance, leadership and coordination across multi-agency work.
Project Goals
The study will help YEF build a clearer national picture of how local multi-agency partnerships are working to prevent children and young people’s involvement in, and exposure to, violence.
We want the research to help us understand current partnership practice across YEF’s five Ps:
- Partnerships: how local governance, roles, accountability and strategic focus on violence are organised.
- Profile: how partners use data to understand the local causes, patterns and scale of violence affecting children.
- People: how local partnerships identify children involved in, affected by or vulnerable to violence, and how children are supported through local pathways.
- Places: how local partnerships identify high-risk locations, make these places safer and engage communities in violence prevention.
- Practice: how local partnerships use evidence, local data and learning about what works when deciding what to fund, commission or deliver.
The national survey will be the main method for the study. It should build a quantitative picture of local violence prevention practice across England and Wales. The survey will be supported by a document review, case studies with selected local areas, and/or other suitable research methods.
Alongside learning from YEF’s Area Leaders Programme, the findings will inform YEF’s recommendations for local multi-agency partnerships on how to reduce violence amongst children and young people.
