Improving Support for Children in the Criminal Justice System

Colleagues from across policing and youth justice are invited to join a Virtual Learning Café run by the Youth Endowment Fund in partnership. This is part of our Evidence in Practice series, giving you opportunity to hear from experts and practitioners.

Every year, thousands of children in England and Wales come into contact with the criminal justice system (CJS) – often for the first time. These children are some of the most vulnerable in society, which is why these interactions with the CJS should be treated as both a safeguarding and public protection opportunity.

In this session, we’ll share key findings from recent research conducted by Cordis Bright into referral pathways and diversionary support for children within the CJS. Insights were generated through a national survey of YJSs, expert interviews, deep dive site visits, and journey mapping with children. We’ll also introduce new guidance developed in collaboration with the Centre for Justice Innovation, setting out practical, evidence-informed recommendations for delivering diversion effectively. The session will offer insights into how services can make referral routes clearer, more consistent, and more equitable – helping to ensure that children get the right support at the right time.

Speakers:
